Newsletter
May 2008 Newsletter FROM OUR CHAIRPERSON Hi Friends and Volunteers
Thank-you for your help with the Large Print book promotion. We
did slip up on the timing this year, coinciding with the school
holidays. Large print books are expensive so sponsorship is
helpful in maintaining a good selection on the shelves. As you know the
sponsor pays just a third of the cost. The balance is paid by the
Friends and the Trust. Our book sale in the Levin Mall at the
beginning of April was a success, organised by Lorraine and her team.
Some fine donations added to the range of books we had on sale, and I
hear that we had a lot of satisfied customers who found a “great read”
at a bargain price. Thanks to donors and helpers. The April
poetry evening in was enjoyed by all those who attended. Glen
Colquhoun was a delightful guest speaker chatting about his work with a
self-depreciating humour that was most engaging. Having an award
winning writer explain the background to his poems before reading them
aloud was a real treat. Our May fundraising bridge
tournament was a great success. Local players and those from Otaki
enabled us to raise $800 towards the new library. We have a
starting date for construction on the new library and community centre
– September 2009. The concept has been finalised and detailed working
plans are being drawn up. There’s a plan included in this newsletter
for you to have a look at. Currently the Horowhenua District
Council is asking for submissions about their Draft Annual Plan.
Submissions close on 26 May 2008. If you have strong feelings about the
need for an upgraded library, do make a submission to the HDC. You can
do this at the library. Forms are there, along with a box to put them
in. Most of us are strongly in favour of the best library
services possible in our region. After all, we belong to a group that
supports our local libraries. The council needs to know about the
depth of support in the community, so take a few moments to make your
views felt – whatever they are. Watch for our upcoming events and spread the word to your friends, neighbours and families. DIANNE EDYVANE NEXT FUN FUNDRAISING EVENT QUIZ NIGHT Friday 20 June - MEMORIAL HALL
Musical entertainment and a fun quiz contest on all topics. Tickets on
sale at the Levin, Foxton and Shannon Libraries from 26 May. Don’t miss it! HOMELINK Have you heard of Homelink? This is the service the library provides for its housebound members. More new couriers will be needed soon to keep up with increasing demands.
If you can help with this very worthwhile service please contact the
librarian in charge of the Homelink service, Celle Gore on 368 1953 -
