The Shannon Library Centre

Horowhenua Library Trust wants to record the amazing generosity that helped us bring the Shannon Library Centre into existence.
We couldn't have opened the new library without substantial grants from:
* Horowhenua District Council $5000
* Lotteries Commission $5000
* Eastern and Central Communities Trust $3000
* John B S Dudding Trust $3000
* Todd Foundation $1000
* Rural Communities Trust $688
Local businesses and individuals also donated cash. Thanks to:
* Cr. Olga Scott,
* Robbie Builders,
* Opiki Line Haul,
* Legacy Antiques,
* Bulk Spreading Co.,
* Sun Ming Takeaways.
Other businesses gave extremely generous discounts on goods and services. These included:
- Feltex Carpets who supplied the carpet,
- Katipo Communications who are the electronic whizzes who set up the computer systems,
- Craig Proctor and the team from Levin East Electrical who rewired and 're-lit' and 're-heated' everywhere,
- Bob Ayson for donations of new children's books,
- Owlcatraz for supplying a continuous hot water urn,
- Just in Time, the Shannon band who kept the street party rolling along.
Shannon businesses really did out-do themselves. These businesses donated prizes for the Raffle:
- Club Hotel,
- Haigh's Meat,
- Phoenix Sportswear,
- Shannon Pharmacy,
- Cafe Extreme,
- PB Motors,
- Puhi Puhi Takeaways,
- CPS Supreme,
- Sun Ming Takeaways.
The Library Trust was particularly overwhelmed with the generosity of local individuals who gave of their time, energy and support.
- Bob Blayney painted for days and days and days on end.
- Les Frost, Corney Andrews and the demolition team, led so ably by builder John McIvor, laboured over that long dirty weekend knocking down the concrete block walls.
- John Jennings Transport came to our aid when we desperately needed a truck for the weekend - thank goodness for our Shannon mates!
- Levin's Nick Wood, Jamie Stokoe, Rob Dickson and Matt Coxon came to the rescue with more muscle right when the Shannon lads needed a boost - thank goodness for strong young men!
The tradesmen who performed the magical transformation worked under a pretty tight timeframe: "Oh come on Rod - 24 hours in a day, mate!" became a catch phrase!
Keith Cloughly produced our plans. Enviro-Plus got the permits organised. The main contractors: John McIvor & Rod Feasey (both builders), Mackie Coutts Plumbing, and Levin East Electrical had to fit in around usual library operations - well done chaps. Fast Phones and Horowhenua Joinery did their bit to ensure the library looked stunning and was fully functional by D-day. The Friends of the Library did all sorts of odd jobs from cushion stuffing to furniture polishing.
Local people worked with Barbara Lucas to ensure the Street party would be a success. Barbara Hughes - the lady with all of the contacts - along with her Good Keen Man, and Christine, organized the market and entertainment activities and posted notices the length and breadth of Horowhenua. Merv Hyde gave advice on many topics and organised the raffle and prizes. Kaumatua Len Te Tomo blessed the new library for us. Matatoa Nursery lent us their truck - which was a great stage for the band. Jenny Forman and Kathleen Roache produced the wonderful cake. Shannon Rugby Club helped with traffic management and Peter Drum from First Aid services was there in case anything went wrong.
The Library Trustees are really proud of the new Shannon Library Centre. We have loved being involved in such a valuable community project, so readily embraced and supported by the Shannon Community. Thank you.
