Starting to Read
Now you've started to read on your own, let's look at the different collections the library has:
- Picture books - books with lots of pictures. Some have only a few words, for reading by yourself. Others have lots of words, for reading aloud.
- Board Books - tough first books that can take the handling only babies can deliver.
- Kermits - your first "chapter" books.
- Children's Fiction - real novels, in both paperback and hardback.
- Castle collection - high interest level, easy-to-read text for not-so-confident readers - both fiction and non fiction.
- Nga Pukapuka - stories in Maori.
- Non Fiction - all the facts about the subjects you are interested in.
- Videos and DVDs - lots of your favourite stories and characters. The newest ones are $5 per week, the older ones are free.
- Talking books books read aloud on cassette or CD - listen to them in the car on a long trip, or any other time.
- Magazines
- Get Well Bags - a bag of surprises for children who are confined to home, and getting bored with it.
- Reference - encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases and other books and CD-ROMs to look up what you need to know. These may not be borrowed, but can be used and photocopied or printed from.
