Teachers and Librarians

Working Together

As well as welcoming class or group visits to the libraries, we have an outreach programme for preschools, schools, tertiary providers and any other group with an educational purpose.

Please let us know as far in advance as possible the research topics that your students are covering. With your help we can provide:

  • Books
  • Magazine articles
  • Current newspaper articles
  • Web addresses

This will help us make sure all students are able to get some information for their research project.

What we can offer

For preschool groups and schools:

  • visits by library staff to your class.
  • a library staff member to talk to a group - children, parents, caregivers, teachers.
  • participation in any special promotion about books, stories or literature - (hint: we love fancy dressing and play-acting!).
  • space to display your class's work - art work, writing about books - whatever you want to boast about.
  • class visits to the library.

For tertiary providers

  • a visit by library staff to introduce library services to your group - students or teachers.
  • display space to advertise the courses and opportunities you are offering locally.
  • class visits to the library.

Class Visits

We welcome visits to the library by groups or classes from our local schools, pre-schools and tertiary providers. Visits give us a chance to introduce students to the variety of materials and services offered by the libraries. We want children to know that the library is a friendly place with helpful staff. We want to make them enthusiastic about visiting out of school hours.

Arranging the visit
We don't have a lot of room in any of our libraries, and it's a squeeze to try to fit more than one class in at a time. So please email Beth, or phone her on 3681953 to arrange a time in advance. This is necessary for any kind of group visit whether it is a programmed visit or for just to choose a book to read.

Arriving on time
Please be on time. If you are delayed please let us know if you can. If you cannot visit us on the agreed day, call us as soon as possible to cancel the visit.

A typical visit

If you would like to come on a regular basis to learn library skills, please ask. Or you can just come to enjoy selecting from our resources.

A typical programmed series of visit may include storytelling, booktalks, quizzes, an explanation of library services and procedures, and an introduction to library skills. For classes visiting on a regular basis during the year a number of specific undertakings are agreed to by both librarian and teacher.

Special requests
If you have any special requests regarding your group's visit, mention them at the time of booking. We will a accommodate them whenever possible.`

Teacher's role
While we lead the visit, our role is that of guest tutor. The teacher is still in charge and responsible for the group. He/she is asked to stay with the group to supervise throughout the visit and to help guide the children in the selection of materials.

Borrowing

We encourage children to borrow during their visit. We can provide enrolment forms for children who are not library members can take home before the visit. When the form has been signed by a parent or guardian, it should be returned to a library, and a card will be issued. This can be done during a class visit.

Library cards
Cards are free (although we ask you to pay $2 for replacement, if lose your card). The card needs to be presented every time when you want to borrow.

Advising parents
Parents and caregivers should be made aware that children may be borrowing library materials during school visits.
